My Development Computer 2017
Here are the essential tools I put in my seven years old personal laptop for my application development during evening and weekend as of July 2017. Most of them are open source and free. My other development machine at work is much better and powerful than this (Intel i7 CPU and 16GB RAM).

Visual Studio Community
My wish become true. Few years ago, I suggested Microsoft should give a developer a free IDE development tools. Apple gives developer XCode and many developers using Eclipse for Java and Android development. Now, Microsoft joins the trend: involving more on Open Source development and give developers a great tool Visual Studio Community 2013, a full professional edition of Visual Studio 2013.
I love it.
As Apple gave Mac Users a free upgrade on OS X Mavericks (v10.9) and OS X Yosemite (v10.10), I guess Microsoft will do the same with Windows 10. Let see...

Check for existing record before insert
To avoid duplicate record in database, it is better to check for duplicate certain column data before insert. Primary key is a good mechanic to prevent duplicate row but don't count on it. Take a look the following SQL statements.
-- Creating temporary table (Notice the primary key is set to identity)
CREATE TABLE #tblTemp
( ID int identity primary key,
ColA nvarchar(30),
ColB nvarchar(50)
);
GO
-- Inserting new record into the temporary table tblTemp
-- If execute this insert statement twice, you will have two row have same data in ColA and ColB
-- with difference ID
INSERT INTO #tblTemp VALUES ('Test A1', 'Test B1');
-- This is better
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM #tblTemp WHERE #tblTemp.ColA='Test A1')
INSERT INTO #tblTemp VALUES ('Test A1', 'Test B1')
SELECT * FROM #tblTemp
Another example using sample database AdventureWorks2012.
USE AdventureWorks2012;
GO
SELECT * FROM AdventureWorks2012.Person.Address WHERE AddressLine1='1970 Napa Ct.';
GO
-- We don't want a duplicate record for AddressLine1 '1970 Napa Ct.' and PostalCode 1597
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM AdventureWorks2012.Person.Address WHERE AddressLine1='1970 Napa Ct.' AND PostalCode=1597)
INSERT INTO AdventureWorks2012.Person.Address (AddressLine1, City, StateProvinceID, PostalCode)
VALUES ('1970 Napa Ct.', 'Lane Cove', 50, 1597);
SELECT * FROM AdventureWorks2012.Person.Address WHERE AddressLine1='1970 Napa Ct.';
GO

Error 5120 When Attached Database
I got error 5120 when attempted to attach sample database AdventureWorks2012 to Microsoft SQL Server 2012 ran on Microsoft Windows 8.1 Preview.
Solution to this problem is simple: Close the current Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and run it as administrator to attach database. Also, do not use 'sa'. Use Windows Authentication instead.
Now, test it as normal user by update a record in the AdventureWorks2012 database.

Install Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web on Windows Vista
When I attempted to install Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web on my Windows Vista using Microsoft Web Platform 4.0, I got this message:
A little surprise, I had no issue in install Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 or Windows 8. According to http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/products/compatibility, the minimum operating system can use to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 is Windows 7.
I have no intention to spend more money in upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7. There is no business value in upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7 on three years old laptop. Thus, stay with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 for now.

Should Developer Tools Free?
Last week, Microsoft announced the next free version of Visual Studio 2012 (or Visual Studio 11) will not free for develop desktop applications. "To create desktop apps in Visual Studio 2012, you need to use Professional 2012 or higher." Other Express versions used to develop Metro, web or mobile applications still free. It's not a good decision. After a strong objection from developers, Microsoft reversed its early plan.
Actually, I do not care whether Microsoft provides free tools for developer or not. If I need a tool, my company will pay for that. The last time, I developed Windows desktop applications twelve years ago. After that, I spent most my time for web applications. Now, I'm learning to develop mobile application in my spare time.
I'm enjoy to use free and open source development tools such as Eclipse IDE, MonoDevelop, gedit, Notepad++, WinMerge, Git, Apache, PHP, MySQL, Sqlite, Python, Ruby, JavaScript... for both web and mobile developments in Ubuntu Linux and Microsoft Windows environments. If I need to develop in Mac platform, I can get Xcode 4 for free from Mac App Store.
Today, it's not make sense to charge developer or anyone interest in programming for development tools.

SQL in the City
Last Friday, I attended "SQL in the City," a free SQL training workshop held in Los Angeles, California. Unlike other free workshops or conferences that mostly about sales marketing, this workshop had a lot of useful technical sessions presented by well known gurus in SQL community. Just few days before the event, I changed my mind. I thought that I will not go since two hours driving to Los Angeles was an inconvenience.
At the event, the speaker asked us about whether we were developers, DBA, or both. I thought I was a developer; that is what I have done my whole career. Actually, I was both when I working for a small company: Developer and DBA. There were many DBA sessions I attended more than Developer sessions since they are my interesting issues.

Google I/O 2011 Sold Out
Cannot believe it. I just read the announcement "Calling all developers! Registration is now open for Google I/O 2011" on Facebook and when I got back to registration page from work, 20 minutes later, it SOLD OUT. VicGundotra tweets: "Google I/O '09 sold out in 90 days, '10 in 50 days... #io2011: 59 minutes"
This is the only developer conference I'm love to attend.

Google I/O 2010
Since Google I/O 2010 soldout early, I could not attend this great developer event. I watched the I/O keynotes live on the GoogleDevelopers YouTube channel from my office. With two computers, I multitasks: listened to speaker while worked on my desktop.
What I learn from Google I/O 2010:
There are a lot of technical sessions I need to view this weekend. I'm so excited about Google development. I tell myself I will not miss the next Google I/O.
What I learn from Google I/O 2010:
- HTML5, VP8, webM
- Google TV
- Chrome Web Store
- Google Web Toolkit integrate with Spring Roo
- Using Google Wave to collaborate
- Google Apps Engine for Busines
- Google Google Storage for Developers

Sold out
Earlier this year, I planned to attend the Google I/O 2010. It would be my first technical conference in 10 years. Yesterday, I checked it back prior to register. It sold out. Yes, "Google I/O is now sold out and registration has closed." Oh geez, Google I/O 2010 is hot. Many people interesting in Google technology.

Southern California Code Camp
Last weekend, I spent two days at Southern California Code Camp at California State University, Fullerton. Every year, since 2006 I guessed, I came to this Code Camp to meet my fellow developers, to recharge my enthusiasm for technology, to learn new things and refresh my brain. This year, I attended all four sessions about mobile applications. Three of them were Android programming. Besides those mobile application sessions, I enjoyed the SQL, C# sessions. The cost to attend this event is FREE.
Thanks Southern California Code Camp organizers. You guys rock!
