Chiều đi làm về quá đói bụng, ghé tiệm xôi ở Nguyễn Văn Đậu. Đợi mua xôi, lấy điện thoại gọi cho đứa bạn, tự nhiên có thằng nhỏ đâu nhảy ra, làm giật cả mình:
- Chú ơi, đừng xài điện thoại ở đây, dễ bị giật lắm.
Mình gật gù, ờ ờ…
- Con biết chú không mua vé số đâu, nhưng nếu được, chú ủng hộ con 1 tờ thôi?
- Sao biết chú không mua? Cho 1 tờ đi — mình bảo.
- Dạ, con cảm ơn chú.
- Con ăn gì chưa, chú bao con hộp xôi nha.
Nó gật đầu, lí nhí cảm ơn.
- Cô ơi, phần xôi của con cô tách làm đôi để trong bịch ni-lông giúp. Nó dặn chị bán xôi.
- Ăn bịch ni-lông độc lắm — mình bảo.
- Tại nếu con xin thêm cái hộp thì tội cô bán xôi. Con để dành cho nhỏ em cũng đang bán vé số chắc chưa ăn gì.
- Chị, vậy cho thằng nhỏ thêm 1 hộp nữa nha, rồi tính cho em luôn.
Thằng nhỏ cầm 2 hộp xôi, rối rít cảm ơn rồi chạy vụt đi. Chị bán xôi góp chuyện:
- Nhìn vậy chớ có lòng lắm. Hôm rồi trời mưa to, thấy người ta bị tắt máy xe, nó lao ra phụ đẩy, cái rồi bị rớt xấp vé số xuống nước, thương gì đâu. Mười ngàn, em.
- Ủa, 3 hộp sao có 10 ngàn?
- Hổng có em tui cũng cho nó mà. Tính hộp của em thôi.
Tự nhiên nghe mắt cay cay… Cổ họng tôi như nghẹn lại…
Bởi vậy có bao giờ rời Sài Gòn được đâu. Lòng tin nhiều khi đặt có thể sai, có thể đúng, có thể bị phản bội… nhưng ở Sài Gòn muốn mất lòng tin cũng đâu có dễ!
Vui quá, tôi chợt hát nghêu ngao một mình: “Phố thị đông, người đông đông/ Tôi như đứa nhóc lông bông, chơi xa mà không về nhà…”
Đừng trách con người, nên chăng trách những này nọ làm họ quay lưng lại với nhau. Đâu cần làm ông nọ bà kia, đâu cần phải vinh hoa, phú quý… Ai đó đã nói: “Làm người tử tế trước khi làm người có học”.

These, then, are the tools of the spiritual craft. If we employ them unceasingly day and night, and return them on the Day of Judgment, our compensation from the Lord will be that wage He has promised: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Now the workshop in which we shall diligently execute all these tasks is the enclosure of the monastery and stability in the community.
